Hospice in der Slowakei

A place of warmth and well-being

The location of this project is in Liptovsky Jan, a village in Slovakia. The concept for the hospice was inspired by a small village called Vlkolinec, surrounded by mountains and located in the middle of Slovakia in the Liptov region. Vlkolinec, one of the World Heritage Villages, dates back to the 14th century and is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and traditional features of European villages. All buildings in Vlkolinec are built of stone bases, wooden walls coated with clay, wooden construction and gabled roof. The design of the hospice is based on the layout of the village of Vlkolinec and was inspired by its placement of streets and houses. The hospice consists of five different buildings, all connected by corridors and gardens. Each building is used for different activities, including therapy rooms, dining room and kitchen, library, common room and a small chapel. The chapel is located outside the area, surrounded by fields and trees to give visitors a sense of seclusion from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The core building of the complex is the common room, in which tradition, family and community are present. To emphasize this importance, the facade of this building is covered with black wood. The interiors are using plywood that represents simplicity and enhances the natural surroundings. Through the use of natural light and the arrangement of the architecture, the user can express themselves individually in the space. The word "village" refers to a community, friends, family, and nature. It is this atmosphere that the place represents: a peaceful environment that combines a harmonious balance between architecture, interior space, and landscape, leading visitors to enjoy their surroundings.  The concept of this hospice offers patients the opportunity to do whatever they feel like enjoy nature, hike, walk, read, be part of a community or be alone, take a day off from the routine, do treatments, switch off all thoughts and still feel at home.
